CSLA Annual conference 2019 Wrap up
District librarians Veronica Ng (March Mnt) and Janell Hansen (VVHS) created a padlet of resources from the many wonderful sessions that they heard this last weekend. The CSLA Annual State Conference was February 7 – 10th at the Pacific Palms Resort in the City of Industry. This was a good venue and will be the site for next years conference as well. Thank you ladies for creating and sharing this information!
Woo Hoo!
Congratulations to our own Nedy Salcedo (LMA I, MVHS) for winning
the CSLA Leadership for Diversity Paraprofessional Scholarship !
Ms. Nedy was awarded the $1000.00 scholarship prize on Saturday and
it will be used towards her Library Tech online courses through the Cuesta
College Program.

California School Library Association's (CSLA)
Annual Conference will be held February 4 – 7, 2016 at the beautiful Bahia Hotel in San Diego. The theme will be "Doorways to Diversity" and there will be opportunities to attend exhibitor learning sessions, workshops, compete for library related prizes and network with information professionals.
MVUSD administration recently extended this professional development opportunity to all district librarians. Librarians who attend can share what they have learned from the conference on this website. Send your comments to [email protected] or post material in the blog section.

ALA Annual Meeting and Exhibits, June 26-30th, 2015
I was fortunate to be able to attend the ALA annual meeting held at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, courtesy of NISO. NISO stands for the National Information Standards Organization and is an organization that develops and publishes technical standards for library applications. NISO offered free continuing education workshops at ALA but I was unable to attend due to the crowded conditions in San Francisco. The ALA Convention was held the same weekend as the San Francisco Pride Parade and the area was congested.
In the exhibit hall, I was able to visit many vendors booths and learn about new products. I found it beneficial to talk with the Gale Representative about our existing database that we recently subscribed to, "Student Resources In Context." She demonstrated features of the database and gave me a preview of content that will be available in 2016.
Book vendors, publishers and authors gave out free copies of their new books and Advanced Readers Copies (ARC's). I accumulated a pretty decent collection of freebies that I will use when creating a new book order. Teachers Aides and library volunteers read the ARCS and offer their feedback on the books. If the review is positive I then locate professional reviews and make a decision. It is very helpful to have the actual book or "sample book" available. Another benefit of attending the conference is that now I have an ample supply of free bookmarks and library posters to use for the entire school year.

Google Apps for Education (GAFE) Training from EdWeb.net
In case you missed the GAFE training by Technology PD Specialist Brian Bates last week, here is your chance to increase your knowledge, free of cost.
On Thursday December 17th, EdWeb will present a webinar called "Google, the Great Differentiator" by Tanya Avrith, Technology and Innovation Specialist and Kim Meldrum, Technology and Innovation Consultant. It will be live at 1 pm PST, but if you cannot attend at that time, register and you will be sent a link of the archived presentation.
Another helpful resource I have discovered is the Google for Education Essential Resources Guide, a 2 page document that is a collection of resources used by districts that have already implemented this technology. The guide has hyperactive links that include overview of the basic features, tips, best practices, use with Chromebooks, tablets and online communities with Google educators.

EdWeb Team Webinar, October 20th, 2015.
Here is a great opportunity for free professional development training courtesy of Mackin Educational Resources. EdWeb is offering a series called Exploring eBooks for K-12 tomorrow at 1 pm PST. The topic will be "Short on Devices? No Problem! Using eBooks When You Aren't a 1:1 School" presented by Stephanie Ham, Director of Library Services, Metro Nashville Public Schools.
There will be a discussion on how to implement eBooks in your library and the classroom and how eBooks address state standards.
The webinar will be recorded and archived for the edWeb community and can be viewed at anytime.
To register, sign up on MackinVIA before the event goes live.
Canvas Network Online Classes
I was introduced to Canvas Network through a colleague whom I met while in Grad school. Our Alma mater, SJSU, was offering a free online course through Canvas and we enrolled to support our former instructor and learn something new.
At the time, I had never heard of MOOC's (Massive Open Online Course) and thought that eventually the hype surrounding them would fade. Well, they are still as popular as ever and after completing three courses over the years, I find I am recommending MOOC's.
MOOC's offer a great deal of flexibility for online student learners but students must be computer literate, have reliable equipment and Internet access. There are many different providers and a wide variety of courses to choose from.
For librarians interested in Information Literacy instruction, an upcoming course entitled "Teaching Library Research Strategies" will be presented by Keith Rocci, a lecturer at Emporia State University. This is a six-week course, that will begin on Oct. 19th and best of all, the cost of enrollment is Free!
