News and Information for members of the MVHS Student Book Club
Field trip to So. Carlsbad State Beach: April 23, 2019
Thanks to the generous grant from National Park Trust Kids to Park Day, MVHS Book club students and friends were able to go So. Carlsbad State Beach and the GIA Gem museum. In the morning, students helped clean up the beach and then enjoyed the beautiful scenery and fresh air. For some, this was their first field trip and others, their first time at the beach.
After the beach, students visited the GIA gem museum in Carlsbad to see beautiful gems from around around the world. Our host stated that being a gemologist or jewelry designer can be a career path for those interested in gems.
Thank you again to the KTP Foundation, Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Bennett, Mrs. Gavilanes-Calero, Mrs. Paz, Ms. Eastern, our bus driver "Nick," and the MVHS Book Club members.

You did it!
I am so proud of all the students who worked hard on the KTP grant contest submission. I am pleased to inform you that your hard work paid off and we were awarded the full amount we requested for our KTP field trip to Carlsbad State Beach!!
There are some changes though. Ms. Ramin is unable to attend but luckily we have found a replacement chaperone; Mrs. Johnson. Mrs. Paz will also be assisting us as our third chaperone.
Mrs. Johnson has filled out the necessary paperwork and is awaiting approval for our trip at 8 a.m. on Tue. April 23rd. Check in is at 7:45 A.M. The time we are returning has changed. We will be back at 3:30 pm and if we are late for any reason (traffic issues etc.), we have extra time available in our grant budget.
Before the trip:
Please pick up the "Teacher release for student field trip" form and the "Field Trip Waiver" form in the library. You must have these filled out and submitted to either Mrs. Johnson or myself on or before April 15th, a Monday. We have also submitted a tentative list of students participating to the Nutrition services dept. head so we can have snacks and bagged lunches available. We will have an opportunity to purchase snacks and food near the beach site as well.
If you would like, bring money for food and/or souvenirs.
Remember to:
- wear shoes that you can walk in.
- It is a good idea to bring sunscreen. Check the weather forecast.
- wear appropriate clothing and consider layering clothing (light jacket/sweatshirt etc.) Remember It's colder at the beach.
- Some people may want to bring a hat.
- Bring your own brown bag lunch or get a school sack lunch or bring money for food/snacks. We are lucky to have been awarded bottled water and granola bars as part of our grant. They will be available on our trip.
During the field trip:
We are scheduled to hear a environmental education presentation by a beach ranger at 11:30. It will last about 1-1/2 hours. Then students will conduct a clean-up at the beach, using trash bags and gloves that are funded by the grant. If time allows, we will visit the nearby Carlsbad GIA (gem) museum. This is a museum, open to the public, that highlights beautiful gems and requires us to request admission at least 24 hours in advance. I have taken care of that and I am awaiting a response from the GIA director.
As part of our grant report we are to submit pictures of our trip using the CA State park mascot, Buddy Bison. The cute stuffty will be delivered to us in our official award package. Also, feel free to use social media with fun pics of our trip using the tags @natparktrust (Twitter) @nationalparktrust (Insta) @movalhslibrary (MVHS Library IG) and @MVHSlibrary (MVHS Library Twitter acct).
*****A special shout out goes to National Park Trust KTP day for funding this fabulous field trip!******

Submitted: National Park Trust's Kids to Parks Day School Contest
Thank you to all club members who diligently worked on the KTP grant application last Thursday. Through this great team effort, we were able to complete the application and submit it electronically on time.
The location that was chosen ended up being So Carlsbad State Beach because it is 1 hour 15 mins (one-way), it qualifies because it is a State beach, they have two available programs for us to participate in and they are near by the GIA gem museum. Here is some feedback from museum visitors on the Trip adviser Site. From what was said, it is a worthwhile visit with interesting exhibits and there is no entry fee. These are all great advantages for us.
The two programs that the park staff offer are: Beach Clean Up (Ecology)- 1 to 1 1/2 hours and Ocean interpretation- 1 to 1 1/2 hours long. We would need to pick one of these programs and we can decide when/if we are awarded the KTP grant.
Thanks again for all your hard work and see you on Wed!

Cabrillo National Monument
Cabrillo Ntl monument is another possible location for the contest application. What you have written so far is more suitable for Cabrillo
National Monument and not Leo Carrillo Historic Park.
The problem is that Cabrillo is a bit farther. It is about 1 hr 40 mins one way and LC Ranch historic park is about 1 hr 20 mins, one way. This will increase our time on the road.
Again the KTP representative said that ,"All public lands at any level (city, state, national) are eligible" so both of the choices are OK.
If you do choose LC Ranch we can make a rest stop at the beach and eat lunch. The main part of the trip is the ranch though. If you choose Cabrillo, it is the same thing-- the main part of the trip is the monument and surroundings (which is the beautiful beach). We can stop at some point along the way for food because the trip will be long.
Here is the link again to the contest page... and here is the link to the previous years sample winning entries.

Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park
Here is some background and interesting history about the park we are hoping to visit.
This may help when writing the park grant application today.

Reminder from Ms. M:
Just a reminder that the National Park Trust grant app for the trip to Leo Carrillo Park in Carlsbad is due this Thursday, Feb 14th! I will have a half day so please talk to me so I can assist with any questions or insight before it is submitted. Good luck to all Book club students who have helped write this grant.
The turnaround is quick and we should know their decisions on whether or not we are an awardee by mid March. :)

Ideas for field trips that are FREE!
Who doesn't love Free! I have compiled a list of potential places that are free admission and could be considered as we decide where to go for upcoming field trips. When you have time, look and review the offerings of these places. We can talk about them when we have another meeting. Meanwhile members should be working as a team to complete the student application for the CA Park contest.
Here's the list so far:
LA Co. Library's Program: "Discover & Go!"(scroll down on the page:) Note that there are a few always-free museums.
Free Museums (Some require reservations)
Museum of History & Art in Ontario
California African American Museum in LA
Timken Museum in SD
Chinese American Museum
Wende Museum
The Broad (requires reservation, though there is a stand-by line)
Marciano Art Foundation (requires reservation)
Hammer Museum at UCLA
California Science Center in LA
Griffith Observatory in LA
Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust
Tolerance Edu Center in Rancho Mirage, CA
LA Public Library Central Branch (docent-led art tours and Gardens)
The RAFFMA Museum at CSU San Bernardino -- raffma.csusb.edu/
Balboa Park Museums in San Diego (there are a number of free options)
UC Riverside Special Collections and University Archives, (learn about book/print history)
LACMA in LA
Mission Inn in Riverside and adjoining Riverside Art Museum
March Field Air Museum in Riverside
The above museums are free for educational tours and some do not have that stipulation. Once a year in Sept. there is also a "Free Museum Day" from Smithsonian affiliated facilities.
Here is an article that references free museums located in LA and Orange Co. One popular choice I noticed was La Brea Tar Pits and museum.
After reviewing any of these places, let Ms. Ramin or I know what sounds interesting.

Meeting notes for Jan. 16, 2019
Tee shirts were handed out and some members paid the $2.00 cost if they still owed it. The tee shirts will be used on Club picture day this Friday. If it is raining most likely the photo will be taken in the gym.
It is a busy time for many members, and so reading is on the back burner. Many have to read for school assignments so it is understandable.
Still, if anyone has time to read, please share what you are reading and why you like it/don't like it.
There is a grant available for us that we can apply for and is relatively simple. It is to travel to a park and would be funded by National Park Trust and their partner sponsors. Here is a link for more info.
This is a student lead grant. It is to promote recycling/respect for nature and the use of parks. You may be asking how does this relate to the book club or books? The library is always interested in circulating books and resources and helping to educate students. Club members can create a display of books that cover our state parks, hiking, survival, backpacking, recycling and nature in general. Then members and other students can put what they have learned into action when they attend the field trip at a local state park. This is an excellent opportunity because the grant will cover the cost of the bus and that is the major expense. Students will have to bring money for lunch or a sack lunch. We will be able to stop somewhere in route and a potential park is Leo Carrillo Park in Carlsbad, CA. (San Diego County). Students will be expected to wear their official club shirt if they have one or a dark blue or black shirt.
Any club members that are able to come in and start the application process, please do so. The deadline is sometime in Feb. and the trip will be tentative planned for sometime in March or April. What a great way to end the school year!

Happy New Year! 2019 Woo Hoo!
The book club is off to a good start thanks to our school bookkeeper Ms. Shirley and our ASB teacher who managed to push through our tee shirt order in time. We avoided the extra costs and received them in time for our club pix that will be taken on Friday. Lifetouch will take pics in front of the school and you have to get a pass from Ms. Ramin or me. I have printed the photo passes and they are on pink paper. Come to the front desk and get yours when you can. Our picture time is 11:45 on 1-18-19. Don't be late!

End of the year wrap up:
We had a nice Christmas party and made a gingerbread house. Thanks to all those who brought goodies and helped clean up!
As of today; I have not heard from the ASB teacher if our paperwork went thought so we can purchase the tee shirts before Jan 1. If it isn't, we will have to add sales tax on the order because the company will charge tax in the new year. If we do not get a P.O. before Dec 31st, we cannot order because we do not have enough money for the tax. The quote from Imagemart is $155.40 for 12 shirts.
Even though we will be off, I will check my email just in case by some miracle we get the P.O. With the P.O. Number I can order via phone since we already have a quote.
Have an excellent vacation and a safe and fun New Year!

Meeting notes for Wed. November 28th, 2018
Yasmine suggested a Christmas party during finals week to have fun and relax during a very stressful time! Potential dates are Dec. 20, Thurs or Dec. 21, Friday. Thursday is our first choice and it is a half day. Monday begins our Winter break, which is from 12/24 to 1/11/19. Tomorrow is the English Dept.'s Literacy night from 5-7 pm and any member who wants to attend to check out the festivities can. Ms. Ramin and I will not be attending and it is expected to rain!
(Left) This is our standard Book Club tee. We need current pricing for a dozen tee shirts through the vendor, Imagemarket.
The price quoted last year was $12.95 (per shirt if 12 were ordered). We already have the image on file.
As of today, there is $140.37 to spend on tee shirts.
This is who is on the list--
MS. ANDREA IN OFFICE (PAID ALREADY)
BRYANNA T
ANDREA V
LORENA S
CHELSEA M
RAQUEL C
EVERARDO C
MARILYN L
JACQUELINE R
YASMINE M
IVONNE S
NICHOLAS V
If the price is still at $12.95 that means we are short $15.03. We can either wait and do another fundraiser or split that amount among 11 students since Ms. Andrea already paid for her shirt. It would be about $1.37 per student. We have a copy of the W-9 from the Image Market Custom Tee Shirt Co . and it should be given to the bookkeeper once Ms. Ramin orders online. We can order with a PO online, if needed.
Recap Movie night fundraiser
While movie night was fun, we agreed that it is not good source of raising funds. Food sales attract kids and not the movie.

The meeting was quick because members had other commitments and Ms. Ramin was in a WASC meeting. At this time of year it is very busy for all of us so we will rely on this site and others to communicate.
What was discussed:
The small amount that was made from Movie night was put into the club fund. There is money in the account that was from the Target field trip grant (leftover funds not spent), the St. Patty's day gram sales and now movie night.
I will email the ASB adviser and ask what our balance is. I will also subtract the small amount that was not spent from Banned Book grant and prepare to send it back to the sponsor. It is approx. $130.00.
A reoccurring question was, what ever happened to the tee shirts that were going to be ordered? These should be ordered now, this needs to be taken care of next meeting. There may be some people who have paid and are no longer in the club and this needs to be addressed.
BBW questionnaires were handed out to those members who had not yet completed one. The responses will be used for the event report to the sponsor that is due this month.
Upcoming activities:
The English dept. has an literacy night planned for Thursday, November 29th. They would like the clubs participation. There would be a table available for us to talk about book club or hand out items like bookmarks. It would be similar to Club Rush.
An adviser must be present to supervise and if we will have one is yet to be determined. If this happens, we need to discuss what we will do as a group for the event. It is from 5-7 and sounds like it is going to be a pretty big event.
Halloween
Halloween was fun as the book club members dressed up to imitate characters from the 80's movie, "The Breakfast Club". Too bad we did not get a pic before everyone left!
Yasmine was the criminal, Ivonne was the athlete, Jackie was the basket case, Marilyn was the Princess and Everardo was the Brain!

Meeting notes for 10/17/18
Club members motioned to purchase snacks like noodles, hot sauce, soda, water, hot chocolate, candy, chips and cheese to sell at our Movie night on 10/16/18 (a Friday night). Members also put up promotional flyers to advertise the event that will be starting at 3:45 pm. We will be selling snacks for 15 minutes and then the movie will begin at 4 pm. Someone needs to pick up the cash box that we will borrow from ASB the day before the event.

We need to test the A/V equipment before then. Marilyn is letting us borrow her mothers hotpot so we can have hot water for our beverages and instant noodles.
Set up will be period 6 on Friday October 26th so stop and get your signature forms so you can be released from class early.
The pic to the left is not real! Good thing we hustled and reserved the date etc. It is true that our movie night event is approved and it is the only one that will take place.
A shout out goes to our talented BC member, Everardo, who made us a fabulous flyer that is posted around campus. We should put up a few more as the date approaches.
Anyone can bring any goodies to donate so we can sell items, they just have to be snacks that are store bought. Keep them in the library in the fridge or back counter for safe keeping on the day of event.

LA Printers Fair
Two years ago we took a trip to Torrance to visit the International Printing Museum. This is a great museum that is hands-on and shows visitors how books were made with demonstrations of various old printing presses.
The museum is having a special event on Oct 13-14th and students are invited to sign up to be volunteers. If you volunteer for two hours, you can get free admission to the fair.
It's well worth the time and very interesting if you are able to attend!

BBW 2018 Wrap - Up!
Thank you to all members, new members and guests that assisted in the BBW week long event. It was a success as we have educated others about Banned Books and even have some new members for the book club!

Notes from meeting on Sept 19, 2018
There is a lot of activities that are in the works for Book Club! Banned Book week is right around the corner and we are just waiting on the official Ok from the new ASB coordinator.
Everardo has done a great job making promotional material and you can view it on google docs. If you haven't seen it, email him and he can share it with you.
Briefly- Monday 9/24, 1st and 2nd lunches, we will have facepainting, photo opp and a opinion poll event. Kids will be asked what is their favorite banned book and why or just their opinion on BB. They can write on a post it and put on our display board or tweet it out on our twitter site (@MVHSlibrary).
Wednesday is our minimum day so we will have a trivia contest asking banned book related questions and fun prizes. We need members to help create good questions and answers from what they learn on the website. It's also possible that there is some material that is out there already we can use. we will have several displays that need to be created so come in the library and see what you can do! :)
Friday during both lunches we will have arts and crafts like button making and loom bracelets all around the BBW theme. we will be set up to video tape anyone volunteering to read an excerpt from their favorite banned book. they can also take pix with our photo drop BBW background.
Ms. Ramin is contacting the person responsible for putting our info on our school electronic sign and our school newspaper. I will contact the local MV newspaper, internet site and our district PR person.
Remember: we need to be sure and mention our wonderful sponsor for this week-long event: Judith Krug Fund Banned Books Week Grant.
Here is an example of my daughter reading from BBW 2015 at ALA.
There will be more information to follow but this is a good start. If you have time, come in the library to help create the displays and promo materials. Shopping will be Thursday and Friday after school lets out.
Thanks, Ms. M.

Additional notes for Sept 6, 2018
The book order for the Banned Books is complete and just waiting for a PO from our schools Bookkeeper. Once the books arrive we will process them and put a bookplate inside with the words "Donated from the Judith Krug Banned Books Week Grant!" These new books will be used for display during our BBW Event on Sept 24 to Sept 28th, 2018.
Book Club Members would like to hold a Halloween event as a fundraiser. We can have a movie night/costume contest and charge $2.50 per person. We can sell pre-sale tickets for $2.00 a person. There is also an opportunity to make money selling snacks. If we purchase popcorn, we will have use of a microwave from the library. The date that is preferred would be Tue. October 30th. We would need to reserve that date after we are "officially" a club.
Does anyone have these movies on DVD?
If we are approved for the date we can schedule the event.
If the date isn't available, we can consider a different date.
Ms. Mares

Meeting notes for Wed Sept 5th, 2018
Hello everyone!
We have already had three meetings but I have been unable to keep up with the website updates due to my mothers illness. I will try and condense what has happened so far:
We were able to apply officially to the ASB to form a club for the 18-19 school year and submitted 12 members names with ID numbers, created, wrote and revised our club constitution, and submitted our application online through the link provided by ASB.
Members nominated, voted and chose other students for the different offices that are listed below. These positions will be held for one school year. There is a new rule that you cannot run for the same position if you've already had it before. We want to give all members a chance to hold a variety of leadership roles within the club.
There was a consensus to join the other clubs in MVHS annual fall Club Rush and it was very successful!
We signed up 28 new potential club members and most importantly, informed and educated others about our clubs purpose and activities!
The Freedom to Read Foundation
Our Book Club has won a Judith Krug Banned Books Week Event Grant! We we lucky to be picked as one of six awardees that will create and execute activities to celebrate BBW this Sept 24th to Sept 28th, 2018! You can read more about the award and history here.
Club officers and members will be taking on some roles in order to hold this event. Any club member with time on their hands, pleas come into the library and help with the ordering of books and supplies for the event. We are looking at buying merchandise from local stores like Staples, Office Depot, Dollar Tree and 99 only. See Ms. Mares for more information.

Book Club Notes for Wed May 16th, 2018
New News!!
President Yasmine made a new Weebly Book Club Blog and the link is here. It is called MVHS Book Club and members can write posts about books that they have read and want to discuss.
We are not taking any more orders for tee-shirts this year and we need to place the order now in order to get the shirts before school ends. The other people in the office who want to get tee-shirts can order them next year.
Ms. Ramin will start the paperwork needed and we will know what if any money we need to give to her. It may be only a difference of $2.00.
We need to discuss the end of the year party and the theme if any members what to assist. Some ideas are:
We could have a part with a theme of Harry Potter and see the movie while we snack on goodies.
Or... Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, or Tangled are also being considered.
Please let Ms. Ramin, Ms. Mares or Yasmine know what theme you would like.
The date for the Book Club end of the year party is May 30th 12:45 pm
****sign up sheet to bring a dish for the pot luck is located at the front circulation desk.
Thanks for a great year!!

April 4, 2018 Book Club meeting news
Today after school there was a book club meeting and five members were present. About $20 was made from the candy grams. Not much, but it gave us experience on what fundraisers to work on.
Before our gram sale, we saw the Spanish club had a movie night and they had a big line. Members agreed that it seems like a better deal to have a movie night. There was discussion about which move we could show and it would have to be a movie that was made from a book.
Members could also see the sample shirt that we have available, size Med.

Get ready for Book Club's first Fundraiser!
We are gathering candies and goodies to put in the baggies for the St. Patty's day gram sale on Friday. Andy has made a sheet that will note who has bought a gram, if they have paid, and where the gram is going to be sent. Yasmine made green flyers advertising the sale and they were posted by Yasmine and Jackie on Friday afternoon.
Yasmine also made a big poster that we will use on our table. We have been approved for a sales table by the Rock during both lunches for Monday - Thursday. So far we do not have volunteers for the table because we just found out that we got the okay for a table. Please spread the word that we are having sales during lunches. Maintenance is supposed to have a table and chairs out for us to use.
Looking at the picture below, it seems as though we should try a movie night event. We could add to the fun by having costumes (or a mini photo-booth) that relate to the movie theme. we can sell snacks and admission fees.
It has been suggested that we have the last 15 minutes of our club meeting for silent reading. This dedicated time set aside is just for reading since we all have so many things going on ;)
Congrats to our book club member Imelda C. for being awarded a $500 college scholarship last week! Woo Hoo!
Have a great day! Ms. Mares

Book Club news for Feb. 7, 2018
Come to the Library and pick up your permission slip and Teacher release forms for the museum field trip. You cannot photocopy these forms. We will only accept Teacher Permission slips that are on the goldenrod colored paper.
Please turn these in by Friday Feb. 9th to Ms. Ramin in room L-05 or Ms. Mares in the library.
Please let us know if you would like a school lunch and we will put in a request for you. We are going to eat at Olvera Street but the sack lunch can be a snack on the way there.
We need some volunteers to cut out the paper shamrocks and put ribbon on them to get them ready for the sweet treats that we will be selling for our March 16th fundraiser event.

Book Club notes for Wed January 11, 2018
This was our first meeting back from Winter break and a lot of members forgot about the meeting. We did have some members present and a few guests. The Donor's Choose Art supplies, calligraphy set and new books were ready so students could try them out. Several students used the new supplies and some checked out the new books.
If you are creating a poem or short story for the contest, please submit it to Ms. Mares ASAP so it can be included in the Mrs. Nelsons contest. You can also submit any materials to Ms. Ramin as well.
Picture day for MVHS Clubs
Book club will have their picture taken on Jan 18th, a Thursday, in front of the school. Please wear your book club tee shirt or a plain blue shirt if you do not have one. An announcement will be made when it is out turn for photos.
Target field trip to LA area Museum
We need to have members decide on a good day to go that does not conflict with tests or sports activities. As soon as the date is decided Ms. Ramin can submit the field trip request. All the paper work accepting the grant monies from Target have been submitted.

Attention Book Club student writers and artists!
Here is the link for Mrs. Nelson's Young Writers Contest 2017 !! Start thinking about a short story, poem and/or accompanying drawing that you would like to enter. We will be submitting all entries as a group (MVHS Book Club).
Here is a great article on the history of the contest and some previous winners.
Note that in the Rules and Guidelines that Rule #9 (One entry per person) does not apply to us as long as we enter the submission as a group. Yasmine talked with someone at Mrs. Nelsons. If we can get a copy of that email it should be put in the BC binder.
The deadline is Feb 11th, 2018! Let's put Mo Val on the map! :)

Meeting notes from Wed. Nov 15th, 2017
It was decided to go with our tee shirt design and company from last year to make things easier. Our St. Patty's day fundraiser will assist us with reducing the costs of tee shirts for active members. Co-Advisor Ms. Ramin will look into current prices and contact the vendor.
Ms. Mares submitted the Target Field grant application for the club to go to La Plaza de Cultura Artes in February. After the field trip it is suggested that we visit Olvera Street and have lunch. Tentatively we will then return at school at 4 pm. We will know if we were funded in mid December.
